With all of the uncertainty surrounding politics today, it makes it even more complicated when politicians change their mind on where they stand. House Speaker Paul Ryan is no stranger to flipping on serious issues. The DACA (Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals) Executive Order written and signed by Obama has created quite the stir in Americans recently. Paul Ryan has expressed outrage as DACA is now being questioned, but where did he stand when it was initially implemented?
In 2014, Ryan called the executive order “blatantly unconstitutional” he was quite vocal about his stand when he interviewed with Sean Hannity
Ryan stated that Congress was already going through the court system on other “unconstitutional laws” that Obama had put in place. He said that the DACA order would be added to the pile. Obama seemed to feel that as President, he could do whatever he wanted. Well, that’s exactly what he said…
Ryan stated that “if he were to do that, by the way, he would put millions of people in legal limbo, poison the well for Congress, and do something that’s so blatantly unconstitutional so we’re telling the administration don’t even think about doing this”, “If you want to change a law, then go to Congress” followed by “You can’t unilaterally write a law as the executive”.
I would have to agree with the 2014 version of Paul Ryan because that’s exactly what Obama did, “He would put millions of people in legal limbo”. The issue surrounding DACA today is a direct result of the unconstitutional actions of Obama. Now, President Trump is being blamed yet again for the short comings of our previous president. President Trump is put in a very bad situation as this is not a decision for the executive branch but rather a law that must be written by the legislative branch. With all of this confusion, people must look back to their classes in civics.
So where does Paul Ryan stand now?
He urged President Trump not to end the program. A once strong opposition to the DACA program is now being embraced by Paul Ryan. The one issue that he stays firm on was his view that Obama overstepped his bounds on writing this executive order. He has made it very clear that Obama clearly did not have the legislative authority to implement the program.
President Trump has since ended the DACA program urging Congress to pass a replacement. There was truly no other path for our president to take as this executive order was unconstitutional.
DACA allows certain illegal immigrants who entered the country as minors to receive a renewable two-year period of deferred action from deportation and eligibility for a work permit. It is quite difficult to take a stand on a matter that was once so blatantly disavowed by Congress.
The fact of the matter is that children brought to our country as minors have no fault, therefore, should fall under some form of protection. With that being said, there has to be a cap on how long this deferment period lasts. As written by Obama, an illegal immigrant can be deferred up to the age of 32. You, in my opinion, are no longer a child at the age of 25 much less 32. Congress must create a path for those to receive citizenship. Congress must create a law that protects children but not create a loophole for illegal immigrants to remain in the country. This circumvents all of the hard work, legal fees and waiting period our legal immigrants have to follow. There cannot be a two-tier system.
Parents do need to teach children a little more respect for our country however, when videos are posted like the one below, it makes it hard for others to “get on board”
Hopefully Congress will come up with a fair resolution and hopefully, parents will teach children a little more respect.
DID THE AMERICAN PEOPLE WIN TODAY?
